Digital Challenges for a More Democratic Reality Between Italy and Europe

CALL is honored to be part of a discussion on Artificial Intelligence and the democratic processes, hosted by Fondazione Feltrinelli. The event addresses the urgent need to strengthen digital skills in order to bridge the digital divide and support the democratic process in Italy. It aims to offer a broader perspective on the role of digitalization and the Internet in enabling democracy, citizenship, and active participation, as well as the main challenges for Italy and Europe in promoting digital citizenship.

Professor Grazia Concilio will be among the panelists. She will specifically focus on the role of DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY in transforming democratic processes, drawing insights from the ORBIS project, which explores the deep-seated communication gap between citizens and policy-making institutions.

The discussion will explore the challenges posed by the digital divide and the rise of misinformation to democratic participation and society as a whole.

In a rapidly changing world where traditional forms of democratic participation are evolving, digital illiteracy not only hinders the ability to exercise civic rights and duties but also directly impacts the very structure of democratic society, threatening its capacity to function openly, fairly, and resiliently. Information overload and the abandonment of traditional information sources in favor of digital media, from social media platforms to blogs and search engines, create fertile ground for the proliferation of fake news and fuel the polarization of public opinion. At the same time, the inability to discern the reliability and veracity of available news, the manipulation of the flow of information, the echo chamber phenomenon, and the advent of AI contribute to growing disinformation and misinformation, exacerbating social and political divisions.
