The manual co-designed and co-produced with Mamme a Scuola Association is now available to read and download here!

Parliamo di Scuola, Avvicinare le mamme immigrate alla scuola dei figli (Let’s Talk School: Bringing immigrant mums closer to their children’s education) was developed and funded within the città-IN project (Polisocial Award 2023) and was recently presented to the public on the 28th of January 2025 at Off Campus San Siro (click here to find out more about this past event).

The manual is addressed mainly to organisations and teachers of Italian as a second language (L2), but has the potential to be adapted and employed within a variety of public services related to education and integration of children and families with immigration background. The aim of the manual is to inform and accompany immigrant mothers in an introduction to the Italian school system. Each chapter of the manual and the respective practical exercises are designed to guide students (mothers) in learning how to access primary school services, such as the school enrolment, the payment of the school insurance, and the school canteen. Meanwhile it provides them with the basic language and culture tools to be able to fill out official and administrative forms. The exercises provided within the manual allow learners to practice technical terminology and cultural information, through authentic examples of digital administrative forms required by the Italian school system. Some classes of Mamme a Scuola have already tested parts of the manual, which was enthusiastically welcomed for its practicality and inclusiveness.

Let us know what you think once you’ve read it!

This manual is both a research output and a research tool. If you are going to use the manual or parts of it, it would be great if you could fill out the evaluation that you can find on this link. Your contribution will help us improve its content and expand its implementation in future contexts!
