Francesca Berni was present at the inaugural Nature in the City event hosted by Sciences Po Paris Campus where she presented her research “Exploring Mycelium in Urban Water Management Through Autopoietic Processes and Holistic Perspectives: Insights from the Polish City of Łódź”. This study emerged from a fruitful collaboration with Irene Bianchi and Giambattista Zaccariotto, developed during the first PALIMPSEST residential workshop in Łódź.

MORE ABOUT THIS STUDY

Highlighting the potential of mycelium-based solutions for urban water systems, the research focuses on autopoietic mechanisms and holistic strategies. By leveraging the networked properties of mycelium, it envisions adaptive, sustainable urban water management approaches that intertwine ecological processes with spatial and environmental considerations, especially within the context of climate challenges.

The two-day conference, skillfully curated by Francesca Ferlicca, Ilaria Milazzo, Manisha Anantharaman, and Tommaso Vitale, featured thought-provoking discussions on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) across various urban scales. Complementary activities like the nocturnal garden walk led by artist Carmen Bouyer and excursions organized by Ville de Paris-Direction des Espaces Verts et de l’Environnement enriched the experience, combining physical engagement with intellectual exploration. Francesca left with valuable insights, particularly regarding equitable resource distribution and water scarcity challenges.

Stay in tune for future updates about the fascinating interplay between mycelium, water systems, and urban landscapes, equipped with new perspectives and renewed enthusiasm!
