Challenging Contradictions through Global South Experiences
“Critical Urban Digitalization” Seminar Series

‘Smart’ imaginaries for urban transitions have been enthusiastically embraced by urban planners and policymakers around the world. Research has shown that the making of smart cities, in spite of the emphasis on participatory and inclusive processes, rarely accounted for the needs of poorer and vulnerable citizens of the Global South megacities.

On the other hand, Deep Transition Futures research has shown the potential for imagining and implementing plural and inclusive desirable futures. Using this approach, Bipashyee Ghosh (University of Sussex) will share insights on how policies and investments can be smart as well as democratic, bridging the existing gaps and learning from past failures to make urban futures in the Global South more desirable.
